Laundry in Lincoln

Hanging laundry on the line

If I’d found this photo in time for the laundry theme week, I’d have posted it then, but it fits with housework, too. I expect my grandmother had no idea this photo was being taken. Based on other photos nearby in the album, I would guess this photo is from around 1952.

I can honestly say I have never hung garter belts on my clothesline.

I love this photo, Laura. Thank you for sharing it.

I wish I had thought to take photos of all the laundry from a family of 7 (plus farmhands) that used to hang on my grandparents’ clothesline out by the vegetable garden in Pocahontas, Iowa.

I can only imagine how much laundry that would be. I thought you’d appreciate the garter belts! I honestly don’t think I’ve ever looked that put together when hanging clothes on my line.

We won’t even talk about what I look like in the wee hours while hanging my laundry. Let’s just say that it’s a good thing my back yard is mostly hidden from view of my neighbors. I haven’t been arrested yet.

What a fun find! I remember Dad talking about how she hung the family laundry in the basement on stormy days.
